2017 materials research symposium awards

At the annual SMS picnic, prizes were awarded for the department’s first annual research symposium held April 20. Congratulations to our award winners:

The prize for Best Presentation was awarded to Zakaria Hsain for Wear Behavior of Annealed Atomic Layer Deposited Alumina Thin Films. His advisor is Nicholas Strandwitz.

The prize for Largest Scientific Impact was awarded to Ally Fraser for Investigation of the Precipitation and Hardening Response of Cast Precipitation Hardened Stainless Steels 17-4 and 13-8+Mo During Multi-Pass Welding. Her advisor is John DuPont.

At the symposium, students gave short talks and answered questions on their research. “Our hope was to promote undergraduate research in the department so students can get hands-on learning experiences and develop themselves creatively,” said Amanda Krause, a post-doctoral research associate with Martin Harmer. “We felt the best strategy to achieve this was to showcase our existing incredible talent. The symposium also enabled our students’ professional development and encouraged their research ambitions.”
