Maret ’16 and research team published in ACS journal

Hannah Maret ’16, together with Derek Weisberg and professors Helen Chan and Nick Strandwitz, had their research paper entitled Seeded Solid-Phase Epitaxy of Atomic Layer Deposited Aluminum Oxide published in the journal Crystal Growth and Design.

In the study, sapphire nanoparticle seeds were introduced onto amorphous atomic layer deposited aluminum oxide films, resulting in the initiation of a solid-phase epitaxial growth process upon heating at temperatures above 900 °C. The shape of the crystallized domains was correlated with crystal orientation, reflecting the anisotropic growth rates of α-Al2O3, in which the basal plane growth directions were found to be the largest.
