In memoriam: Carolyn Elizabeth Johnson Conard

Carolyn Elizabeth Johnson Conard, a beloved teacher, administrator, wife and mother, died on Monday, August 3, 2015. She was 93.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1922, Carolyn grew up in the New York area and attended Adelphi Academy, where her father was headmaster. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1943 and joined the WAVES, living and working in Washington DC as part of the Navy’s cryptology program until the end of the war. In 1946, she married lieutenant commander George Powell Conard II.

After moving to Bethlehem in 1952, she completed graduate work at Lehigh University and was employed at Moravian Preparatory School and then Moravian Academy from 1959 until 1981. She served as a Social Studies Teacher, Director of Studies, Dean of Faculty, Guidance Counselor, Head of Upper School and finally Associate Headmaster. She was also a member of the League of Women Voters and the Town and Country Chorus.

Among her many notable contributions to Moravian Academy, Carolyn was instrumental in encouraging and leading the successful merger of the Preparatory School and the Seminary in 1971 and was honored in 1981 for her many years of service. A flowering tree was planted on the school’s Merle-Smith Campus in her honor. She served as a Moravian Academy Trustee and Honorary Trustee since 1982, lending her talents and energy to many Moravian Academy Board committees. In 1986, she honored the Academy by starting the Carolyn J. and George P. Conard Endowment Fund, which is used for financial aid.

Upon retirement, she continued to serve as a trustee for Moravian Academy for many years. Carolyn was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, where she was active in the “Hi Neighbors” program. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

She is predeceased by her husband, George P. Conard II, and survived by her three daughters, Susan (husband: David Randall), Elizabeth, and Gianne; grandchildren Lindsay (Husband: Sean Heiserman) and Alan; great- grandchildren, Parker and London; and many step grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Kirkland Village, 1 Kirkland Village Circle, Bethlehem, PA. Contributions in Caroln’s memory may be sent to Moravian Academy, 4313 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem, PA 18020 or to Meals on Wheels of Northampton County, 4240 Fritch Drive, Bethlehem, PA 18020.

About George P. Conard II

George P. Conard, who predeceased Carolyn in 2003, was a professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Lehigh University for 33 years, serving as department chairman, 1969-77. He was a visiting professor at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, in 1975 and 1982. He received a bachelor of science degree from Brown University, Providence, R.I., in 1941, a master’s from Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, N.J., in 1948, and a doctoral degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., in 1952. He was also a commander in the Navy reserve during World War II, serving in the Admiralty Islands. He was a member of the American Society of Metals, American Association of Metallurgical Engineers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Sigma Xi, an honor society for science and engineering. The George P. Conard II Award is named in his honor and is given annually to an outstanding graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering.
